The profile of the Chennai metropolitan area
- The capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, is India's fourth-largest metropolis.
The Greater Chennai Corporation, Avadi Corporation, Tambaram Corporation, Kancheepuram Corporation, 12 Municipalities, 13 Town Panchayats, 1 Special Grade Town Panchayat, and 22 Panchayat Unions (comprising 1321 villages) make up the expanded Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA). CMA now covers 5904 square kilometers. (The figure depicts Chennai's environment).
Chennai District, portions of Thiruvallur District, Kancheepuram District, Chengalpattu District, and a portion of Arakkonam Taluk in Ranipet District are the five districts in Tamil Nadu State where the extended CMA is located.

CMA, which spans 1189 square kilometers under Chennai District and includes portions of Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram, is made up of Greater Chennai Corporation, Avadi Corporation, Tambaram Corporation, five municipalities, three town panchayats, and ten panchayat unions (a total of 179 villages). Contiguous territories in 1225 villages were added to the CMA's jurisdiction in October 2022.
